As a Gestalt therapist I work holistically. This includes exploring your feelings, thoughts, dreams and how you hold emotions in your body. Furthermore, we would consider the wider context of your life e.g. work, home, and relationships. I have a particular interest in the impact of wider issues (socio-political, environmental and economic) on wellbeing.
As most of the issues people bring to counselling are connected to relationships, I actively use our therapeutic relationship as a tool for growth. Relational therapy is a collaborative process in which there is a recognition that 'our' relationship can aid insight into the wider relationships in your life. This includes a sensitivity to the importance of class, gender, race and culture on wellbeing.
As a Gestalt therapist I am skilled at working somatically (with body process) as often the body holds emotional or psychological distress. The exploration of present moment sensations can bring helpful insights and deeper understanding. My approach also draws on ideas from neuroscience, attachment theory, and compassionate focussed therapy. I believe therapy requires a careful balance of support and challenge.
